“Will” played along until IT got information on how they would get back to Earth. He asked Fitz and Fitz said he is the key so IT teamed up with him.

To be clear, Jemma didn’t know if Fitz made it back either. She didn’t see him until she turned around. At least that is how Jeff Bell wrote the scene to be perceived. From Fitz POV though, he could see it as Jemma looking for Will and ignoring him until she turns around.

Jemma said that in a WTF moment that she “felt” that IT had lost its powers and wanted them back. Horrible exposition but it explains why Fitz was able to put up a fight against “Will”. IT only had “Will’s physique to combat him. Now, back on Earth is a different story.
