Captain America Civil War Precursor on Agents of SHIELD?

Captain America Civil War Story Line

With the release of filming news for Captain America Civil War, I thought it would be a good time to write about the seeds of Marvel’s Civil War showing up on the Agents of SHIELD TV show.

When Marvel first started using the tagline “It’s all connected”, I was immediately annoyed because at that time it really didn’t feel like there were very many connections at all. Without spoiling some of the underlying plot points for the show, I will say that I am now able to see the connections being made from the movies and Netlix originals, to ABC’s Agents of SHIELD. Most of these connections are extremely subtle, however with a little digging it’s easy to point them out (which is what we do on our Agents of SHIELD Fan Podcast).

The Captain America Civil War story line is centered around the Superhuman Registration Act which is a bill that enforces the mandatory registration of super-powered individuals with the government.

As early as the 5th episode of season 1, Marvel made sure an item referred to as “The Index” was mentioned on the Agents of SHIELD TV show. The Index is “a list S.H.I.E.L.D. keeps of people and objects with powers. It’s merely my own speculation, but I believe that Marvel planted the seeds for this story line in the show in order to build up to Captain America Civil War.

On the series the group often discusses the need for the index, and who is on it. While this is by no means jaw dropping, the idea that Marvel thought everything out so far in advance is impressive.

I continue to be impressed with not only how Marvel sets up future story lines, but how they change course when things aren’t working.
