Internet marketing with class

Pushy internet marketing is something that has irritated me for years. In my opinion, internet marketing has a sleazy connotation. Over the years I have seen countless internet marketers stick their hand out asking me for my email address, other personal information and money. Much like a door to door salesman that sticks his foot in your door so you can’t close it on him, most internet marketers try to pry information from you before it’s time. In my opinion proper selling requires a) a need that has to be filled b) an honest solution.

Before you internet marketers get fired up, try to understand that we are bombarded with messages all day long. While watching TV we are told that if we swallow various little pills all our issues will go away. While we are driving down the expressway we are led to believe that these giant, poorly targeted, billboards are the answer to our needs. Then, when we get on the internet we are confronted with more obnoxious “cure-all” offers.

Supposedly internet marketers have the solution for our financial concerns, weight loss/health issues, and how to become super popular on the web. But in fact they are merely regurgitating information that they’ve received from someone else. When a video starts out with the statement “This program won’t cost you a cent” I already know they are going to ask me for money later. When a video starts out with the statement “This program is different than all the rest”, I already know their offer is more of the same.

So what do I want? I want to see something different. I want to see an internet marketer do something original (or at least something I haven’t seen hundreds of times over). Allow me to decide if you deserve my email address. And for goodness’ sake don’t make a popup that stops me from closing your webpage. What is this 1999? I get the whole (exchanging my email for information routine) but please make sure your information is complete and not just a portion of the solution I need.

If you’re an internet marketer and would like to discuss what I’ve written, please email me. I would like to do a podcast interview with one, or more, internet marketers and get to the bottom of why you think being pushy is the only way to sell.
